The legendary “Research as Design” class has been offered at Stanford since 2010. Since then we have worked with hundreds of students from diverse fields such as astrophysics, neuroscience, business, history, computer science and many others.

We have expanded our teaching team to give you more diverse perspectives and experiences.

  • Anja Svetina Nabergoj founding member of Research as Design group at Stanford and educator passionate about helping individuals become the most creative version of themselves, in business & in science

  • Sebastian Kernbach from St. Gallen University in Switzerland and co-counder of Life Design Lab

  • Adam Royalty founding member of Research as Design group and a design superstar with backgrounds from Stanford, Columbia and currently completing his PhD at Harvard

  • Austin Meyer Stanford alum, improv wizard and co-founder of Collective Capital and most importantly award winning documentary film maker

Our class includes various modules for students and researchers:

- Energy competence: How to manage your time and energy more intentionally?

- Science of action: How to beat procrastination?

- Getting unstuck: How to overcome road blocks and make progress?

- Visual thinking for scientists: How to use visual skills for your own progress and better team collaboration?

- Idea generation for scientists: How to increase the number and novelty of your ideas?

- Storytelling for researchers: How can you make your research as exciting as a good movie story line?

This class is for PhD students at all levels and post-docs who wish to produce high-quality research output and better understand how creativity can help them gain clarity, make insights and produce sustainable progress.

Join our class if you wish to complement your analytical skills with creative problem solving abilities so that you can face the unknown, learn from failure without feelings of guilt, manage your energy, time and emotions and cultivate reflective practice to build resilience. We will explore how to be playful and have fun while exploring your research topic and how you can embrace ambiguity that is inherent and critical to innovative research.
